By invoking the original Egyptian text Book of the Dead , Rukeyser assigns a mythic importance to the miners who were asked to descend into the underworld that would eventually foster their demise.

However, as Michael Davidson points out in Ghostlier Demarcations: Modern Poetry and the Material World , "their journey is not a search for lost cultural plentitude, but a fatal contract with progress Rukeyser deflates the modernist mythological imperative typified by Eliot 's invocation of cyclic vegetation myths.

Buried in this waste land are the corpses of workers for whom a reading of the classics would have offered little sustenance.

While "The Book of the Dead" is consistent with Rukeyser's ongoing dedication to a poetry of "witness," it is unique in that it draws on, and includes, an abundance of non-literary source material, thus widening the lens of the poet as documentarian and activist.

He claimed that there was never any negligence on the part of the administration and that there was no known documented case of silicosis reported by one of his workers.

He also said that he never heard his employees complain about the conditions while working in the tunnel. The allocation of money was based on race and marital status, just as wages and housing had been earlier.

In the West Virginia House of Delegates passed a new state worker's compensation law which would compensate workers who were infected with silicosis.

Despite this giant step forward in compensating workers for illness contracted on the job, there were many loopholes.

These loopholes cleared the employer of responsibility for the disease and made eligibility for this law almost impossible for workers.

Some of the clauses that made eligibility so difficult were clauses involving the length of employment someone had to endure before they could claim workman's compensation under this new law.

The hearings that existed at this time did not do enough to relieve or compensate the victims and their families, despite the new legislation that was passed.

A positive aspect of these hearings was that these hearings opened other people's eyes to the danger of working with silica dust and to the risks involved with working in tunnels and mines.

By the late s most of the nation's leading newsmagazines such as Time and Newsweek were running articles about the Hawk's Nest Incident.

The national exposure that silicosis was now receiving made other industrial projects aware of the danger that was imposed on their workers. In addition to the national exposure this industrial disaster was receiving in print, there was also a song written about the suffering of the men at Hawk's Nest.

The famed blues musician, Pinewood Tom, wrote one particular song. This song was appropriately titled "Silicosis Is Killing Me.

An actual number of how many people died as a result of silicosis in Gauley Bridge has never been reached; however, the estimate has been set at around deaths.

There have been no authoritarian documents to tell us what exactly happened. The victims remain for the most part anonymous.

There were no headstones for the graves that have been found. The numbers of how many died vary in different reports, just as the causes of these deaths were constantly debated.

The agreement has always been reached right around The one consistent factor is that proportionally more blacks than whites died in this great disaster.

Black deaths were also underreported, thus skewing the number of deaths even further. Investigators tried to obtain more information about deaths at this time through a comparison of county records.

This process proved futile since many records were only accessible through a certain date, thus, leaving several incomplete files.

It was also difficult to find a "normal" death rate for the time to compare the death rates of these workers with.

These records also did not account for the numbers of migrant workers who left the area after completing their work and possibly died from silicosis elsewhere.

It then re-enters the river near Gauley Bridge leaving a section known as "the Dries" in between. During the construction of the tunnel, workers found the mineral silica and were asked to mine it for use in electroprocessing steel.

The workers were not given any masks or breathing equipment to use while mining, although management wore such equipment during inspection visits.

As a result of the exposure to silica dust, many workers developed silicosis , a debilitating lung disease. A large number of the workers eventually died from silicosis, in some cases as quickly as within a year.

There are no definitive statistics as to the death toll from the Hawks Nest disaster. According to a historical marker on site, there were admitted deaths.

A Congressional hearing placed the death toll at Construction of nearby tunnel, diverting waters of New River through Gauley Mt for hydroelectric power, resulted in state's worst industrial disaster.

But the range and daring of her work, its generosity of vision, its formal innovations, and its level of energy are unequalled among twentieth-century American poets.

Catherine Moore did a much better job of dealing with a complicated background needed to appreciate the superior work of Muriel Rukeyser.

Also accolades for the beautifuly bound and printed publication by WVU Press. This book was enlightening and maddening. Many men were sickened and died at the hand of a corporation Union Carbide and Carbon Corporation who could have changed all that by following safety rules, such as providing respirators and wetting the sandstone before boring through the mountain full of silica.

The deplorable conditions the workers had to live and work in were shameful. The corporate criminality and coverup during and after was unfathomable.

Originally in , Muriel and a photographer visited Gauley Bridge to document the conditions of one of the worst industrial catastrophes in American history.

The center section of the book contains the names of the hundreds of men who died between April December , their age, race, and place of burial, as well as can be documented.

Following the list, is the original collection of poems by Muriel. This disaster brings me anger and tears.

I am glad that Catherine has again brought this to the forefront, to pay homage to those who lost their lives and the many families who were affected by the dereliction of this corporation.

Nearly ninety years ago, hundreds of workers, while digging a big tunnel for diversion of water for power, contracted silicosis lung disease from drilling through silicon rock with dry drills and no face masks.

Great numbers of them died. The dry drills and no face masks were all about speed and profit for Union Carbide and Carbon Corporation and their stockholders.

This is said to be the largest corporate-industrial crime in US history. Since many of the workers were brought in for the job from other states, and since many were also black in a time of segregation, West Virginians themselves tend to have had little acquaintance with the events.

Rukeyser was herself an outsider, a poet and a New York Jew. Thus the introduction by Catherine Venable Moore, a nationally known writer from West Virginia, is extremely valuable.

She approaches the events as a sympathetic native and makes the connection to corporate crimes that people in West Virginia and the rest of Appalachia do know-- the Buffalo Creek flood, for example, as well as some natural disasters.

In it Rukeyser turns brutal Depression Era facts into searing poetry and calls the reader's attention to a huge ragged labor scar on our nation's face: The event is considered the worst industrial catastrophe in the history of the United States and for good reason.

This edition, published by West Virginia University Press with an eloquent introduction by Catherine Venable Moore, drives home the horror of this tragedy and the hundreds of deaths resulting from an unregulated and unconcerned industry.

This project is considered to be one of the worst industrial disasters in American history. To generate electricity for a plant downstream at Alloy , Union Carbide 's Kanawha and New River Power Company subsidiary decided to divert the New River to improve its power generation ability.

A dam was constructed immediately below Hawks Nest to divert most of the New River flow into the tunnel. It then re-enters the river near Gauley Bridge leaving a section known as "the Dries" in between.
